| Bathsheba at Her Bath Rembrandt van Rijn (1654) The model for Bathsheba was Rembrandt's third de facto wife, Hendrickje Stouffels. Examining carefully the upper outer quadrant of her left breast, one sees skin discoloration, peau d'orange, and distortion of symmetry with axillary fullness. These features are typical signs of breast cancer. Hendrickje died nine years after this painting was finished with symptoms suggestive of metastatic disease. Tuberculosis has also been suggested as explanation for these findings. |
